About Chauncey

With a nod to the Legibility Group from the 1930s, Chauncey reimagines the classic typeface Excelsior for the modern age as a low-contrast typeface. While Excelsior served primarily as a text typeface, Chauncey distinguishes itself with display qualities and excels in larger sizes, showcasing its tightly set Hairline and Ultra styles. The weights from Light to Black are ideal for longer texts, preserving the warmth and charm of metal typefaces often lost in adaptations for photo typesetting and digital fonts. Drawing inspiration from the printed image and incorporating ink bleed-inspired design aesthetics, Chauncey incorporates round corners and reduced typographic contrast, resulting in a design that is friendly, warm, and serious all at once.
